Your Kingdom Come

Mark your calendar for January 6, 2013.

Let’s pray for our country

Your Kingdom Come will be a 24-hour prayer vigil.

How will it work?

The day will be split up in quarter hour increments beginning at 12:00 a.m. ending at midnight (e.g. 12:00-12:15 a.m., 12:15-12:30 a.m.). Of course, you can sign up for consecutive timeslots and/or multiple non-consecutive timeslots throughout the day.

And here is what we’ll be primarily focusing on:

Matthew 6 says,

Pray then like this:
ā€œOur Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
(Matthew 6:9-13 ESV)

This 24-hour prayer vigil is for people who are able to take time to spend time in prayer. Please sign up for a timeslot. We would love to get every time slot filled so that this will truly be a 24-hour prayer vigil.

As the day gets closer, we will ask that you submit a comment with the time(s) you plan to spend time in prayer. (Just not yet! Just mark your calendars!)

What We Can Pray For

    • Our nation’s leaders would repent and believe in Jesus (Matthew 3:2; Romans 10:9)
    • Our nation’s leaders would do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8)
    • We would do the same (Matthew 3:2; Romans 10:9; Micah 6:8)
    • That we would learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, and plead the widow’s cause. (Isaiah 1:17)

O God,

We bring to you now the parts of our lives that we have not yet given you, and the parts of ourselves that have trouble receiving your love.

We confess that You have blessed us with great wealth and possessions. You have shown kindness beyond measure, yet we have spurned your love and exchanged your glory for the very good gifts you have given us.

We confess our desire for a ā€œfair trade,ā€ a desire that cheapens your love and your grace. You have loved us lavishly, and we accept your offer of unconditional favor.

We confess our tendency to view our giving through eyes of want, not eyes of abundance. Teach us the joyful thanksgiving that overflows with your plenty.

We confess that we isolate ourselves from others in the world ā€” from their existence, from their need, and from their kinship.

We confess that Jesus is Lord and Savior of all and on whose righteousness we rest and in whose name we confess our sins and in whose hope we offer all our prayers. Amen.

An Honest Insight From An Unbeliever

Sam Harris writes in his book Letter to a Christian Nation,

We agree, for instance, that if one of us is right, the other is wrong. The Bible is either the word of God, or it isn’t. Either Jesus offers humanity the one, true path to salvation (John 14:6), or he does not. We agree that to be a true Christian is to believe that all other faiths are mistaken, and profoundly so. If Christianity is correct, and I persist in my unbelief, I should expect to suffer the torments of hell. Worse still, I have persuaded others, and many close to me, to reject the very idea of God. They too will languish in “eternal fire” (Matthew 25:41). If the basic doctrine of Christianity is correct, I have misused my life in the worst conceivable way.

I have written elsewhere about the problems I see with religious liberalism and religious moderation. Here, we need only observe that the issue is both simpler and more urgent than the liberals and moderates generally admit. Either the Bible is just an ordinary book, written by mortals, or it isn’t. Either Christ was divine, or he was not. If the Bible is an ordinary book, and Christ was an ordinary man, the history of Christian theology is the story of bookish men parsing a collective delusion. If the basic tenets of Christianity are true, then there are some very grim surprises in store for nonbelievers like myself. You understand this. At least half of the American population understands this. So let us be honest with ourselves: in the fullness of time, one side is really going to win this argument, and the other side is really going to lose.

Slave Trade

What we have learned from talking to women is that Maine is a fertile ground for trafficking,

Sadly, the slave trade is alive and well. Bangor Daily News explains,

AUBURN, Maine ā€” The going price for a Maine girl on the countrywide sex slavery market is between $2,500 and $3,500, said Sgt. Tim Ferris of the Portland Police Department on Thursday.

Details like that helped hammer home the point that modern-day slavery is here in Maine during the second annual Not Here Conference that began Thursday in Auburn.

Gerron Jordan reports,

After researching and learning about this “slavery” in the U.S., Havens learned that the term had taken on a slightly different meaning. He said it had a different look than the chains and shackles that people recall learning about in school. This slavery was in the form of human trafficking.

This horrible travesty is happening all over America, as well as, around the world.

Many Americans think the slave trade (aka Human Trafficking) is happening “out there” or only in third world countries.

The sad reality is, It is happening in our own backyard.

100,000 to 300,000 children are exploited, many through prostitution, pornography and sexual entertainment

Tulsa World explains,

It’s a dirty – actually tragic – little secret. The U.S. State Department lists the United States as the No. 1 destination for human trafficking, especially of children and young teens. California, New York, Texas and Oklahoma are at the top of the list of states most active.

Human Trafficking is difficult to quantify much less combat:

Human trafficking … has become a ā€œpervasive part of daily life.ā€ … the tools to deal with the problem are relatively limited, because the only option is to press criminal charges.

Note This series is to raise awareness of the human trafficking epidemic not only around the world but in our backyard in America.

Was the Old Testament Premillennial?

I think it is a safe thing to say that all (as in all) theologians agree the Old Testament authors were premillennial in their understanding of Eschatology.

However, some theologians would deduce (wrongly) we need to be premillennial, as well.

Concession

Since the OT authors wrote their prophecies before Christ’s first Advent, they were premillennial.

But, when Christ came, the millennium began at His resurrection.

So, the NT authors have inherently become post-millennial but not necessarily PostMillennial.

What Is the Future of the Church in the USA?

Leonce Crump answers the question, ā€œWhat is the future of the church in America today?ā€

He says,

I believe we have done church the same way for so long that the idea of a new yet simultaneously ancient form of doing church is almost inconceivable. The idea of living in natural rhythms of life in community. The idea that the Sunday gathering isnā€™t the end all, be all, the big show, got to get everybody in. The idea of being sent rather than saying ā€˜come to us.ā€™ Some of those things are almost inconceivable, because church to some degree has become industry. Itā€™s become an easy desk job for intelligent men who donā€™t want to work with their hands, but for who may not necessarily have a vision for changing the world wit this powerful message of the Gospel. And I think unless we re-conceptualize from the scriptures what the church was intended to beā€”a body of people, a body of believers moving toward the reign of God while proclaiming the goodness and glory and grace of God to those who are not embracing the reign of Godā€”then I think weā€™re going to continue to drift into irrelevance…
